Summer is upon us and with that comes sunscreen. Sunscreen should be a year round thing but in the summer time its especially important. Here are my tips to avoid sunburn and keep your skin looking great.
-Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you plan on going outside. This gives it time to soak in and give you maximum protection.
-Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
-SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It tells you the length of time you can stay out in the sun without burning. If you normally burn after 10 minutes with no sunscreen, an SPF of 30 will protect you for 300 minutes. Keep in mind this does not account for sweating and swimming which will wear your sunscreen away faster.
-Sunscreen can rub off. If you apply sunscreen to your front at the beach and roll over to have someone do your back, congratulations you've just wiped off the sunscreen you used on your front. Another reason why you need to apply 30 minutes before going outside.
-Don't mix SPFs. If your moisturizer has an SPF of 15 and you put an SPRF of 30 over it, it doesn't equal an SPF of 45. Layering SPF can actually make sunscreen LESS effective so pick one SPF product for your face and one for your body.
-You don't need to buy a separate face sunscreen. Just make sure the one you use on your body is oil free, and non-comedogenic, which means it won't clog pores.
-Between the hours of 10am and 4pm is when the sun is the brightest. Reapply sunscreen more often and try to stay in the shade or covered as much as possible between those times.
-Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
-Apply sunscreen liberally. One tube shouldn't last the summer. It should last maybe 2 or 3 beach outings. Apply a shot glass size amount to your body and a nickel size amount to your face. Don't forget ears, toes, under your feet and the part in your hair.
-An SPF of 50 is fine. Any higher is basically the same thing.
