My Favorite Halloween Movies

It's Halloween weekend! In celebration, I have put together a list of my favorite Halloween movies. Enjoy!

1. Paranormal Activity
Rating: R (All three)
This seems to be becoming a franchise much like Saw. So far there are 3 movies, with the first being great, the second being ok and the third being just behind the first. These movies are just creepy since they deal with possession and they are almost entirely filmed in a "home movie" format. The first movie has a slow buildup that cashes in in the last 10 minutes. The 2nd and 3rd movies rely more on traditional scare tactics, with a lot of moments that make you jump. They are rated R because they deal with possession and there is some swearing, but not anything overly sexual. They're good movies to watch in the dark with a bunch of people.

2. Sweeney Todd
Rating: R
This is one of my favorite movies. It's a musical, which adds a nice depth to a horror movie. It's not a scary, jump out of your seats movie, its kind of a quiet, creepy movie. The music is oddly catchy and you will catch yourself singing it long after you watch the movie. It's rated R because there is a lot of blood in this movie (A LOT), but it is all very dramatic (this is a Tim Burton masterpiece). The blood is comically red (as an homage to the stage play) so I don't find it all that creepy, but everyone is different. There is also many instances of violence. But again, they can be somewhat comical, being that this is a Tim Burton production. This movie really depends on your comfort level with blood (fake as it looks) and violence. There is not much in the way of sexuality.

3. BeetleJuice
Rating: PG
This is just a classic. Another Tim Burton creation, this has the perfect mix of comedy and creepy. This a good movie to watch if you are really not a fan of horror movies as there is some gore, but it is comical and no jump out of your seat moments. There is some swearing in this movie so be aware. This is just a fun movie to watch since Tim Burton is great at creating fantasy worlds.

4. Rocky Horror Picture Show
Rating: R
Ahhh a classic. I actually just went to see this movie last night at a local theatre and this movie is just so much better that way. Props, yelling things at the screen, its a great time. This movie isn't scary per se, (its more a comedic musical) but it is a Halloween classic since many theatres show this movie around Halloween. It is a pretty mature movie though. There is a lot of sexuality and cross dressing in this movie, some blood and gore, though it is mostly used for comedic effect. If you haven't seen this movie, I suggest you do and if you can see it in a theatre, all the better!

5. Nightmare Before Christmas
Rating: PG
Ok, ok, I know, it's another Tim Burton film (I can't help it, he's my favorite director!), but this is also a Halloween classic. It's actually directed by Henry Selick, which many people don't realize, but it is a Tim Burton idea and story. It's also done in one of my favorite animation mediums, stop motion animation. This is a quirky movie but I would caution parents to view this movie before showing it to their kids since Tim Burton can be a bit dark for some children. Nevertheless, this is a good Halloween movie for those who don't like the pants scared off of them.

So, there's some of my favorite Halloween movies! Have you seen any of these? Did you like them? What are some of your favorite Halloween movies? Leave me a comment and let me know!

Have a safe and fun Halloween everyone!
